Someone asked the elder Kenneth E. Hagin when he was at the end of his years if he had any regrets. He responded by saying he wish he had taught more on the importance of speaking and singing in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Eph. 5:19) (Col. 3:16).
Why is this so important? Why is this so necessary?
God’s plan under the new covenant is for His people to be continually filled with the Spirit. Speaking or singing divinely inspired utterances, whether it be with your own understanding or in tongues, is the primary way we stay filled. These psalms, hymns, and songs are not rehearsed or recited from a song book, but they are given by the Spirit. The general pattern throughout the scriptures is that when believers were filled with the Holy Spirit they spoke either in tongues and/or with their own understanding.
